Milan Literary Tour
At the indicated time, we'll meet by the Columns of San Lorenzo to begin this literary tour of Milan. Verses, prose, and historical notes will be the star of this tour designed for avid readers!
During the tour, we'll explore the corners of the city that have inspired authors such as Ernest Hemingway, Eugenio Montale, and Alessandro Manzoni. We'll reveal all their connections with the capital of Lombardy!
While walking through Milan, we'll learn about the interesting life of Antonio Boggia, a murderer who was the last person to be condemned to death in Italy. We'll explain how this story inspired Maurizio Cucchi to write his book L'indifferenza dell'assassino ("The Indifference of the Murderer"). We'll also come across a plaque in honor of Alessandro Manzoni, one of the representatives of Italian Romanticism.
Afterwards, we'll dive into the novel A Farewell to Arms, by the famous Hemingway, and contemplate the places frequented by the protagonist of this book. Did you know that it was published during the Wall Street Crash of 1929? And, that it was banned in Italy until after World War II because of its anti-fascist references? You'll also discover what role the writer Fernanda Pivano played in this story!
Finally, we'll learn about the life of the poet Eugenio Montale. After a 2-hour tour, we'll say our goodbyes on Via Brera, near a bar that was frequented by many intellectuals in the 20th century.
